Waha is a programme that builds collective understanding of citizenship, civics, and change. It’s a gateway for young people to find their own voice, their collective voice, and raise themselves and their people up.

Waha
YOUr Voice.
Our VOicE.
waha.
When young people know more about their power as citizens of Aotearoa, together, they can be louder and prouder about their place in the world.
About
Waha brings civics education to students. The programme is designed to engage young people in a positive, motivating, and uplifting way.
In reo Māori, “waha” can mean gateway, an opening, or a passage. Here, the subject of civics is made open, engaging and relevant to young people. As a verb, “waha” takes on an even richer meaning: to rise up. In this context, Waha serves as a gateway to rise up towards democracy.

YOURVOICE
The Programme
Structured over three learning phases, the course supports young people to find their civic voice, understand the power of collective voice, and work together to create a more caring and inclusive Aotearoa.
The programme comprises multiple practical elements – including both game and video elements – which can be used in multiple ways. Teachers and students may want to use bite-sized additions within the lesson, or build your whole civics programme around it. It’s entirely up to your rōpū.

Info for Schools
A fully modular programme, Waha is designed to support students to get involved in civics education with greater confidence and depth.
Educators and young people both told us it is hard for students to see the relevance of civics. Built using a co-design approach with young people, educators and lawyers, Waha aims to break down this barrier through fun, engaging material that is attractive to young people and relevant to their daily lives.

Resource Hub
Waha’s resource hub will be designed as a pick and mix portion, where you can find sub-topics, additional classroom activities, and links to external resources.
It will create further teaching moments, extend learning, and help students navigate the broad and complex world of civics.
Every school is different and so is every classroom. Our resoruces will give teachers the flexibility to follow the needs and interests of their young people, or insert new material into their school curriculum - there’s no fixed path.

Just like civics, Waha is an evolving hub for resources and external subject material.
Waha World is a hub where you’ll find anything new, including case studies, reflections, and a curated collection of links and resources provided by partner organisation. Here we will reach beyond the world of Waha to the best civics content we can find.
